Random House Children's Books is seeking Publishing Assistants to provide administrative support to two editorial groups within the Random House Children's Book Group. Each role reports to the Publisher, coordinating within editorial imprints, across departments in the division, as well as outside of house with agents, authors, and illustrators. They are comfortable juggling a varied workload and deadlines, while remaining calm, attentive to detail, and able to see the joy in our work, which is to create books that turn children into readers!
The ideal Publishing Assistant candidate is organized, highly motivated, and comfortable asking for help when needed. Every day, they liaise with a variety of people, fielding queries that must be responded to in a courteous and timely manner. This is an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to multiple areas of the children's publishing process, including editorial.
The editors at Random House Children's work across all age levels and formats, from baby board books to Young Adult. Some of the brands and series within our teams include Little Golden Books, Step into Reading, Magic Tree House, Grumpy Monkey, Pizza and Taco, and creators such as Lisa Yee, Emily Winfield Martin, Chris Grabenstein, and Tamora Pierce. Responsibilities: - Provide administrative support to the Publisher and editorial team.
- Act as the liaison with other departments (art, marketing, publicity, sales, etc.) and communicate key information to the editors in the group.
- Daily tasks include calendar management, meeting prep and note-taking, working across a variety of proprietary online systems, grid and file maintenance, and drafting and sending imprint communications.
- Assist with author, illustrator, and agent management by drafting communications, and interacting directly with our creative partners.
- Generate and process expense reports, invoices, contract requests, book orders, library of congress data, and other business tasks, including assisting with P&L's, all with training.
- Participate in brainstorm meetings and other creative department efforts, including reading and evaluating potential projects, researching trends and competition, and pulling sales data.
- Write title information sheets, book summaries, metadata, cover copy, and other creative editorial copy. Create Powerpoint slides and assist with title launch presentations.
- Potential to contribute to departmental social media or Spanish Language publishing efforts, if those are of interest, and other special projects to support the overall efforts of the imprint.

- Excellent communication skills, both verbal & written, and experience managing communication in a timely manner, across all means of communication. An interest in creative writing and copywriting a plus.
- Enjoys working collaboratively as a team player, and would be comfortable interacting with a broad range of publishing professionals, artists, writers, and colleagues.
- Proven ability to work independently and proactively, to take initiative, prioritize, and problem solve when needed in a fast-paced office environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Adobe, and ability to learn new applications.
- Appreciation for children's books and diverse voices in the marketplace.
- Fluency in Spanish a plus.
This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities, which will include but not be limited to in-person meetings and mailings for authors and out-of-house editors. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA).
The entry-level salary for this position is $48,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results. Kindly include your cover letter and resume in our application system.
